Return of the Living Dead
Never before has the horror and comedy genre been spliced so effectively. Return of the Living Dead is a rollercoaster ride of laughs and chills. I had the opportunity to meet one of the writers, John Russo. We met at a convention in Novi, Michegan.
This movie begins with a caption stating that it's based on a true story. We open with Frank and Freddy working in the Uneeda Medical Supply Warehouse. Frank is training the young Freddy, showing him this, teaching him that. After Freddy takes the tour he realizes that this warehouse has a lot of weird shit in it. That's when he pops the question, "What's the weirdest thing you've seen come through here?" Frank tells a tale on how The Night of the Living Dead movie was based on a real story and the reason the corpses came back to life was because of a chemical, 2-4-5 trioxin. At the end of his story, Frank tells Freddy that the corpses were accidently misplaced by the army and shipped in tanks to their warehouse where they now sit in the basement.
It's from the basement where the terror is unleashed on them and the surrounding area (which includes a graveyard) when a tank is accidentely breached. The dead come back to life with more power than ever. A gang of punks fall victim to the undead army when they party in the cemetary. The survivors must hold up at the mortuary with Frank, Freddy, their boss Burt and our embalming buddy, Ernie. As the plot unfolds they must barricade themselves in the embalming room and hope for help to come.
When the cops are no match against the undead force, the number on the side of the tank is dialed and the army 'launches' it's contingency plan. They've been planning for this to happen, they just didn't know where or when. Who will survive the Return of the Living Dead?

Return of the Living Dead II
A few years after the first Return of the Living Dead was released it's first sequel was on the way. This film was more a comedy than a horror. It features the same actors who played Frank and Freddy in the first film, only they play a different duo.
As the army ships the tanks back to where they belong, one of them falls off the truck and rolls into a tunnel. When the neighbourhood bully finds it he unwittingly releases the safety catch and the poisonous Trioxin infects him. The Trioxin also effects the bodies of a nearby graveyard. You can guess what happens next. From here we follow a little boy, his sister and her boyfriend as they continously flee from the zombies. Along the way we are introduced to a whacked out doctor and some pretty unusual walking corpses (like any walking corpse wouldn't be unusual).
The climax comes when a method to kill the monsters presents itself. Then, it's up to our heroes to lure the new army to one area where they can be disposed of for good. Do they succeed? You'll have to rent it. It's definately worth a watch.

Return of the Living Dead III
This last installment in the Return series focuses on the army using the Trioxin to produce zombies for testing. Obviously for some insane defense project. This research is done in some remote base. We are introduced to the base's leader's son and his (extremely hot) girlfriend. When news hits home that they're moving (again) his son attempts to leave and brings his girlfriend with him. En route they are involved in a motorcycle accident which ends up killing her. Beyond rational thought and knowing what his father is up to at the base, this lad steals his father's security card and infiltrates the base. With high hopes of reviving his freshly dead girlfriend with Trioxin he administers it to her and waits. That's right! You guessed it, it works. She awakes, seemingly coherent and normal but soon an insatiable hunger for brains ensues.
As they flee they are noticed and the chase begins. The military will stop at nothing to contain the girl. Afterall, she's going to be their finest specimen. While they hide they are terrorized by local thugs. We get to watch as our newly revived beauty commits murder for sustanance. Her confusion grows further and further until she realizes that she's not alive. She's dead. She comes to find that the only thing besides eating brains that stops the hunger is pain (this will explain her self-mutilation). We are introduced to some pretty wild zombies that are left in her path. I'll save the ending for your enjoyment. If there's a movie out that makes you hot for the undead it's got to be Return III.
