Evil Dead, A mayhem of demonic possession and gore galore!!

The Evil Dead

In the early 80s, a small group of film makers, headed by Director Sam Raimi, would create a horror film that shocked the world. A no holds barred gore fest that would prove to be a truly frightening movie.
For those of you who haven't yet seen this film, let me paint you a little picture. Four co-eds go to a small cabin in the woods. While settling in they discover a tape recorder along with a wicked looking dagger and a book inked in human blood and bound in human flesh. Curious of their find, they play the tape and listen to the translated incantations that are written in the Book of the Dead. And through those incantations, begins a fury of demonic possesion, excessive dismemberment, cruel hauntings, massive bloodletting (of all different colours), and all sorts of scenes that continually make you cringe. Excellent make-up and well rounded characters make this a primary horror film. No expense is spared (compared to the low budget) to make you sick to your stomach as you watch this movie.
Watch a tree rape some chick (no shit!!), a man be brought to axe his girlfriend into a dozen pieces, and another dude having to stab his girlfriend, watch her vomit black and white blood, bury her in the backyard only to have her resurrect and start clawing through his flesh from her new grave. Interested yet? That's only the first half of the movie. You have to check out Sam Raimi's THE EVIL DEAD.

Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn

"Legend has it that it was written by the Dark Ones. Necronomicon Ex Mortus. Roughly translated, Book of the Dead..."

In the late eighties, a sequel/remake of the original Evil Dead became a whole new realm of horror. This movie combined humour with all out blood and guts effects. The gore is more excessive than the first film, but black humour makes part 2 silly, and entertaining as Hell.

"...The Book served as a passageway to the Evil worlds beyond..."

We begin with Ash taking his girlfriend up to the cottage that damn neared killed him in the first film. Is he nuts? When he gets there he finds the tape recorder (again) and proceeds to play it. Within the first ten minutes of the film, Ash manages to get his girlfriend possessed, lop off her head in a familiar shovel scene and bury her in the yard. An interesting date.

"...It was written long ago, when the seas ran red with blood..."

But don't worry!! After he takes care of Linda the deja vu subsides for a different approach. We get more of 'the evening after the first film' feeling and the new chapter really begins. I remember how surprised I was when I saw that Evil Dead 2 had more colours of blood than the first one. Variety is the spice of life. And in buckets it was poring, too!! For no reason at all. POW!!The wall decides its going to upchuck 500 litres of blood all over Ash (gross scene....and funny too). We get to watch Ash's world crummble around him as the Evil Dead does everything in its macabre power to drive him insane.

"...It was this blood that was used to ink the Book..."

Then we get to meet the unfortunate newcomers, who either turn into groteque demons or die in a juicy fashion. Either way I was happy. The secret of the book is unlocked by the ghost of the Professor. His daughter must recite the passages that will make the Evil manifest itself and then open the time rift that will send it back in time. Back where the Chosen One waits to destroy it.

"...In the year 1300 A.D. the Book disappeared."

Director Sam Raimi really creates a great horror film. A bigger budget and ingenious experimentation on film makes Evil Dead II a cult film for all time. Bruce Campbell quickly becomes a favourite horror hero as Ash takes slam after slam from the Evil Dead and just keeps on tick'in.

Evil Dead III: Army of Darkness
The third and (regretfully) final chapter of the War against the deadites. Director Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell return to change the pitch yet again with this witty, fantasy driven adventure.
As Ash is caught in the vortex he finds himself pulled into the 14th century with nothing but his double barrel, his chainsaw appendage and his old clunker car. What else could you possibly need?
The locals, mired and jaded by war with their neighbouring enemies, are quick to pass judgement on (the way out of place) Ash. It seems they have a deadite (Evil Dead) problem and they have fun chucking their enemies into the pit containing the captured possessed. But Ash has been down this road before. By destroying the deadite and surviving the pit Ash gains respect and works out a deal with a wiseman. If Ash can find and retrieve the Necronomicon, it has the power to send him back to his own time and rid the town of the deadites.
After a wild fantasy ride Ash finds the book and accidently misspeaks the words, awakening the Army of Darkness. He then must help the town defend their castle (and the book) from the Evil General (played by Bruce Campbell) or all is lost. This movie is more fantasy than horror. But it gives us little reminders of the gore and horrifying creatures of the previous films along the way, making it a true Evil Dead flick. By the way, look for the alternate ending floating around. It's pretty wild.
